# "Content Too Large" error

The "Content Too Large" error occurs when an image you're trying to upload exceeds the size limit.

All uploads from your computer share these rules:

* There is no hard pixel size limit, but your browser needs to be able to load the image. Very large files (e.g., 10,000+ pixels or 50MB+) may fail silently and simply not appear
* Each upload link expires after 5 minutes. Extremely large files that take longer to transfer will fail
* If a file doesn't appear after uploading, try reducing the file size or dimensions before re-uploading

## When Images Are Compressed

Compression only happens when it's needed to keep things running smoothly:

**Import Designs (local upload):** No compression and no conversion — files are uploaded at their exact original size, format, and quality. Printify receives exactly the file you uploaded, including SVG files, which stay in vector format all the way through.

**Mockup Generation (local upload):** Images over 5MB are automatically compressed before upload:

* Opaque images (no transparency) are converted to JPEG at progressively lower quality (85% → 70% → 50%) and capped at 4,096 × 4,096 pixels
* Transparent images (PNG with alpha) are resized progressively (4,096 → 3,000 → 2,048 pixels) to reduce file size

Mockup pack photos are additionally optimized when stored: images over 4MB are converted to WebP with progressive quality reduction (90% → 60%) and, if still too large, resized to a maximum of 4,000 pixels on the longest side.

**Mockup compositing:** During generation, design files over 20MB are resized to a maximum of 4,000 pixels on their longest side before being placed onto your mockup photos. Smaller files are used exactly as uploaded. This does not affect your original file. Generated mockups are saved as high-quality WebP images.

**Shopify publishing**: No additional compression happens at publish time — Shopify receives each mockup image exactly as it was stored after the upload-time optimization described above.

**A note on SVG designs in Mockup Generation**
SVG designs retain full quality throughout. Designs sourced from your Printify products use the high-resolution image Printify rendered. SVGs uploaded directly inside the Mockup Generation wizard are rendered from the vector file at the exact size needed for each mockup, keeping them sharp at any size.

**Tip:** For best results, keep your source designs high-resolution (we recommend under 4,000 px on the longest side). If an upload ever fails silently, try reducing the file size and uploading again.
