# Using the designs tool

## Using the Designs Tool

The Designs tool turns your artwork into a finished product in your store, automatically. You upload a PNG, and WeScale does the rest:

1. **Prepares your artwork.** It removes the background if needed, resizes the design, and checks which of your garment colors it suits.
2. **Places your design on your own mockups.** These are the blank product photos you uploaded to your mockup pack in Settings, one per color. You set them up once, and Designs reuses them for every design.
3. **Creates the product in Shopify and Printify.** The product is created in Shopify as a draft, with pricing, description and sizes from your Settings.
4. **Sends your mockup images to Shopify.** They go to Shopify only. Printify keeps its own default images.

You review the draft and publish it when you’re ready.

## What Designs does — and what it doesn't

Designs is built to remove manual work entirely: you upload your artwork, and WeScale handles background removal, resizing, mockup placement, color matching, and product creation automatically — complete with pricing, description, tags, and sizes already set up from your brand settings.

* **Mockup colors are set up in Settings, up to 16 per product** — but Designs doesn't guarantee all of them will be used. It automatically analyzes your artwork against each color and removes any where the design wouldn't be visible enough (for example, a white design on a white shirt). If you need full control over which colors are used, use Import Designs instead.
* **One design applies to all your selected colors.** Designs doesn't support using different artwork for different colors — for example, a light-colored version of your design for dark garments and a dark version for light garments. If you need that, use Import Designs, which supports per-color uploads.

* **You can manually adjust placement** using **Edit placement** in the Products tab — width, height, rotation, scale, and position.

* By default, Designs uses AI to generate your product title automatically. If you'd rather set titles yourself, turn off **AI product titles** in **Settings → Words** — your product title will then use your artwork's filename instead, with your configured prefix and suffix applied. You can also change the product title: Open the product in the Products tab and edit the name where you edit colors and placement.

**If any of this matters for how you work, Import Designs + Mockup Generation are still fully available** — they give you full manual control over placement, titles, colors, and design variants, at the cost of doing more of the setup yourself.

**Before you start:** you'll need to have completed your brand setup first. If you haven't finished setup, you'll be prompted to complete it before you can upload.

## Uploading your designs

1. Go to the **Designs** page and click the upload area, or drag your PNG files onto it.
2. Wait for your files to upload — progress shows per file.

**A few things to know before you upload:**

* You can upload up to **100 files at once**, each up to **100 MB**. If you try to upload more than 100 files in one go, the whole upload is rejected — split larger batches into smaller groups.
* Only PNG files are supported.
* You can cancel an upload while it's in progress, but not once it reaches **"Finishing up — registering your designs."** Keep the page open until this step completes; after that, WeScale keeps processing in the background even if you leave.

## What happens right after you upload

| Result | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Accepted | Your design is being processed | Check its status — no need to re-upload |
| Already present | The filename matches a design you already uploaded (this is based on filename, not the image itself) | Click View existing to see it, or Got it to dismiss |
| Replaced | This file corrects a design that previously got stuck | Its checks restart from the beginning |
| Rejected | WeScale couldn't accept the file | Read the specific reason given and fix the file, or split your batch |

**If you're asked to fix and re-upload a file:** export the corrected artwork using the **exact same filename** mentioned in the message. Renaming the file will cause problems — don't use a different name to try to bypass this.

## What happens after upload

Once accepted, your design goes through several automatic checks before it's ready:

1. **File check**: Makes sure your PNG is readable and undamaged.
2. **Background & sizing**: If your artwork already has a transparent background, it's used as-is. Otherwise, WeScale removes the background automatically.
3. **Resolution check**: Your artwork needs to be at least **2,500 pixels on its longest side** after this processing. If it's too small, you'll need to export and upload a larger version.
4. **Print-quality check** _(when active)_: Flags artwork where fine details might not print well:

* A **warning** still lets your design continue automatically.
* A **hold** pauses your design — you'll need to choose **Continue anyway** or **Remove design**.
5. **Color matching**: Checks how your design looks against each color in your product, removing any where it wouldn't be visible (see above). _For multicolor or gradient designs, double-check the result yourself — the automatic check is more limited for these._
6. **Placement & sizing**: WeScale automatically scales your design to the largest size that still looks right on the garment, and places it in the print area — following the same standards used for WeScale's own brands. If your design would still print too small, you'll need to export a larger version.
7. **Naming & mockups**: **Product titles are generated automatically by default, and you can edit any title afterward.** Open the product in the **Products** tab and edit the name in the same place where you edit colors and placement. To use your file names as titles from the start, turn off **AI product titles** in **Settings → Words**. Your prefix and suffix are applied.
8. **Product setup**: Your new product is created with pricing, description, tags, and sizes already filled in from your brand settings, so it's ready to review.
9. **Choosing a product page template:** In **Settings → What gets published**, you can select a Shopify product page template for each product type. This applies only to new products published from that point forward — existing products keep whatever template they already have. Leave it unchanged to use Shopify's default template.

## Tracking progress

You'll see status labels like _Queued, Prepping, Print check, Checking colors, Placing, Building previews, Writing the title,_ and _Finishing._ These show which check is currently running — they aren't time estimates.

**To cancel a design** that's in progress or needs attention, open its **… menu → Cancel**. This isn't available once a design is finished, or for designs created for an existing Shopify product.

## Finding and reviewing your designs

**Designs are never published automatically — they're created as drafts.** When you're ready to make one live, you can:

* Open the design, click on Edit Product and click **Publish**, or
* Go to the **Products** tab and publish multiple designs at once in bulk.

_Tip: To check a draft product, open it through your Shopify admin — a storefront link may not work until the product is live._

Click into a design to see its mockups, generated name, and which colors were kept or removed (click a color to see why). Click the original artwork thumbnail to see what you uploaded, or click any mockup to enlarge it — use the arrow keys or Previous/Next to browse.

Use the search bar to find designs by name or filename, and filter by **Source** (All / Uploaded / From Shopify) to tell your own uploads apart from designs created for products you already had in your store.
