Why republishing in printify can replace your custom mockups
The core logic
WeScale-generated mockups — from either the Designs tool or Mockup Generation — are pushed to Shopify only. They are never sent to Printify. This is expected, not a bug.
This means:
- On Printify, you'll always see Printify's own default mockup images for your product.
- On Shopify, your custom WeScale mockups are what customers actually see, since WeScale replaces Printify's defaults there when it publishes.
Why editing a product in Printify can undo this
Since Printify has no knowledge of your custom mockups (they were never sent to Printify in the first place), its normal publish behavior is to sync everything — including mockup images — back to Shopify. When it does this, it pushes its own default mockups, overwriting your custom WeScale ones on Shopify.
This can happen any time you edit and publish a product directly in Printify — for example, if you're changing the print placement.
How to make Printify changes without losing your mockups
- Make your change in Printify as usual (e.g., adjusting placement).
Before publishing, find the sync settings and uncheck "Mockups."
- Make a small edit to another field (e.g., add a space to the description) — Printify needs at least one change to sync.
- Publish. Your change applies, and your existing custom mockup stays untouched on Shopify.
If you skip step 2, publishing in Printify will replace your Shopify mockups with Printify's generic defaults, and you'd need to re-publish from WeScale to restore your custom images.
Editing print placement doesn't update your Shopify mockup image
If you're changing where a design prints (its placement/size) in Printify, keep in mind: this only affects what's physically printed on the garment. It does not update the mockup photo shown on your Shopify product page — that image was generated by WeScale and stays exactly as it was unless you regenerate it separately. So after a placement change, your product will print correctly, but the photo customers see on your store won't reflect that change.
The safest way to change placement: use Edit placement directly in the Products tab — it updates both your mockup image and your Printify print placement together, without any risk of overwriting your mockups. Only edit placement directly in Printify if you have a specific reason to, and follow the steps below carefully if you do.
