Importing designs with the wescale app

With the Import Designs tool, you can upload your design files and create Printify products in bulk.

We’ve introduced the new Design tool to make things easier, but you can still use the old Import Designs feature if you prefer.

Here’s how to access it:

  1. Click on the Design feature.
  2. In the top-right corner, look for the option to switch to the old Import Designs tool and click on it.

You can then continue using the old workflow to import your designs.

Step 1 - Choose Your Designs

Upload your designs directly from your computer. You can drag and drop files, click to browse, or paste with Ctrl+V. You'll see thumbnail previews of each file with a remove button. Maximum: 50 designs per import.

Here are some best practices you should apply to your designs before they are ready to be uploaded to the tool.

  1. The designs should be upscaled and without a background.
  2. If you have designs with different aspect ratios (square, portrait, landscape, etc), it’s best to create separate folders for each ratio and upload them in separate batches. Eg, one folder for square designs, another folder for portrait designs, etc. This will make it easier to upload the designs in the correct mockup configuration.

Step 2 — Choose a Product Template

Next, select a product template (also called a Preset). A preset defines how your Printify product will be created:

  • Which product type (e.g., Gildan 64000 Unisex Softstyle T-Shirt)
  • Which print provider
  • Which colors and sizes to include
  • Where to place the design on the product

You can:

  • Pick a saved template — shown as visual cards with product image, color swatches, and size tags
  • Import from an existing Printify product — pulls the configuration from a product you've already created in Printify

Editing a Preset:

Click the Edit button on any preset card to modify its default configuration. Changes made here are saved to the preset and will apply to all future imports using it. The following options are available:

  • Preset Name — Edit the name of the preset
  • Description — Customize the product description using the rich text editor
  • Colors — Add or remove color variants
  • Sizes — Add or remove size variants (XS through 5XL)
  • Pricing — Set retail prices per size. Optionally enable compare-at prices to show sale pricing
  • Title Prefix / Suffix — Add a prefix or suffix to all product titles generated from this preset
  • Tags — Add or remove Shopify tags applied to products
  • Publish to Shopify — Configure default Shopify settings:

  • Category — Assign a product category
  • Shipping Profile — Select the default shipping profile
  • Default product template — Select the Shopify product template to use
  • Default publishing channels — Choose which channels to publish to (Online Store, Point of Sale, Shop)
  • Add Color Swatches — Toggle to enable color filtering on Shopify. Note: only turn this on if using the BuildMyPOD theme; otherwise use Globo Color Swatch instead

Step 3 — Colors and placement

This step gives you control over which design appears on which color variant. It's especially handy when you have designs that look better on certain backgrounds, like a light design on a dark shirt, or vice versa.

You'll see a card for each of your designs, displaying all available product colors with a preview of how the design looks on each one. From here you can:

Swap a design for specific colors — click Swap beneath any color to open the swap panel. There, you can select a different version of the design and choose exactly which colors it should be applied to. This is useful when, for example, you want to use a dark version of your design on light-colored shirts and a light version on dark ones.

Toggle colors on or off — any color you disable won't be used to create products.

Adjust placement — you can edit your design's placement on the mockup directly in the app

Adjust Placement Editor

It has two panels:

  • Left panel — shows the design card with the design name and a Change Design button, plus fine-tune controls for Width, Height, X, Y, and Rotation, with a Center button to snap to dead center and a Reset button to discard changes.
  • Right panel — shows the interactive canvas where you can drag the design, resize it with corner handles, and rotate it with the handle above. Switch between print areas using the pills below the canvas without closing the editor.

The header always shows Design · Variant · Position so you always know exactly which slot you're editing.

When you save a placement, you can choose how widely the change applies:

  • Save for all variants of this design (default) — applies the same placement to every color for this design. Use this most of the time.
  • Save for this variant only — only changes this specific design + color + position combination. Use this when one color needs a unique tweak.
  • Save for this color across all designs (Advanced) — every design on this color uses this placement.
  • Save for every design × every color (Advanced) — applies this placement to every cell at this print area position.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Save scopes are per print area — saving on the Front doesn't affect the Back or other positions.
  • More specific saves override broader ones — a per-cell save always wins over a per-color save for that tile.
  • The Save button stays disabled until you actually move something.

Placement editor availability

The placement editor works on the most commonly imported Printify blueprints (Gildan 64000, Comfort Colors 1717, Bella+Canvas 3001, and others), covering roughly 91% of historical imports. If your template's blueprint isn't supported yet, Step 3 will show a simpler color-only view where you can still swap designs per color, but repositioning isn't available. A banner will explain this. If you need a specific blueprint added, contact the WeScale team.

Step 4 — Preview your Designs

Review all your designs before importing. Some settings available here overlap with your preset configuration — any changes made in this step apply to the current import only and will not affect your saved preset.

There are two ways to apply edits in this step:

Edit individually — Click the eye icon on a product to edit its settings on its own

Edit all at once — Click the Edit All option to apply changes across all products in the batch simultaneously

Available options include:

  • Title Prefix / Suffix
  • Description
  • Colors
  • Sizes
  • Pricing & Compare-at price
  • Tags
  • Publish to Shopify (Category, Shipping Profile, Default product template, Publishing channels, Color Swatches)

Take a moment to review the full list of designs that will be imported, then you're ready to go.

Step 5 — Import Processing

Click Import to Printify and let the app take it from there. Everything runs in the background, and a progress bar keeps you updated with live stats: how many designs have been processed, how many succeeded, and if any encountered issues.

A few things to keep in mind while the import is running:

  • Don't close the browser tab: Doing so may interrupt the process.
  • Designs are uploaded, and products are created automatically, with up to 10 being processed at a time.
  • If you enabled Shopify publishing, your products will also be pushed to your store automatically.
  • Your progress saves automatically. If you refresh, step back, or get interrupted, you can pick up right where you left off.
  • If any designs fail, you can retry them directly from the flow summary at the end, with live progress shown for each retry.

If Printify's rate limit is triggered during an import, a cooldown banner appears at the top of the screen showing:

  • A warning that background jobs are paused
  • A countdown timer until you can resume
  • The banner disappears automatically when the cooldown expires

Once the import is complete, you'll see direct links to view each product on Printify and Shopify. From there, you can kick off a new import or head over to Generate Mockups to create professional product images for your store.

⚠️ Important: Complete your Import Designs before using Mockup Generation

If you're using both Import Designs and Mockup Generation in your workflow, make sure your products are fully published to Shopify before starting the Mockup Generation flow.
